Inspired by a comment made by Chomp in our Top 10 of 2013 thread, I decided to see what everyone considers their favorite home video releases of the year. I don't know about the rest of you, but I spent a lot more time this year in front of my TV watching releases from Arrow or Scream Factory than I did watching new releases. My favorites for the year are below in no particular order. They are based on bonus features as well as my enjoyment of the film.

Big Trouble in Little China UK Blu-ray (Arrow)
The Fog (1980) Blu-ray (Scream Factory)
    Badlands Blu-ray (The Criterion Collection)
    The Howling Blu-ray (Scream Factory)
Night of the Comet Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (Scream Factory)
Maniac Cop 2 Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (Blue Underground)
The Last American Virgin UK Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (Arrow)
Crystal Lake Memories Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack with Bonus Disk (1428 Films)
Streets of Fire UK Blu-ray (Second Sight)
Breaking Bad: The Complete Series Blu-ray Collection (Sony)

I'd definitely put Synapse's Demons Steelbooks on my list, but the price of them is just too much of a negative. Great fucking releases though...definitely deserve an acknowledgment.

    In no particular order (Blu-rays):

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (Koch Media) Germany
Army of Darkness (Ultimate Edition) (Koch Media) Germany
    Body Double (Twilight Time) U.S.
Howard the Duck (Koch Media) Germany
    Isolation (Sunfilm) Germany
    Marathon Man (Paramount) Germany
Peter Weir Collection (Koch Media) Germany
    Serial Mom (Universal) Germany
    Society (Capelight) Germany
    The Crow: Salvation (Universum) Germany
    Tootsie (Sony) Germany

    Honorable mention:

Voyage of the Rock Aliens (VZ Handels GmbH) Germany. The 4:3 version looks decent, the zoomed 16:9 version is awful.
    Sophie's Choice (Universal) Germany

    Most disappointing:

    Roland Emmerich Collection (Universum) Germany
They used poor VHS-like quality in SD for the included U.S. Versions of "Ghost Chase" and "Making Contact", with "Making Contact" letterboxed and forced subtitles. The German versions (Original Extended Versions) have excellent PQ, but no English audio or Subtitles. If anything, this set is worth checking out for "Moon 44" alone. Presented with English audio option, no forced subs and very good PQ.

Some semblance of an order with the best at the end:

    Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman (Criterion)
This was really out of the blue and a fair price even at retail, a steal at 50% off!

Black Devil Doll From Hell / Tales from the QuaDead Zone (Massacre Video)
Long promised and passed between many a indie DVD label, Massacre Video finally delivered with a plethora of editions including VHS.

Jean Rollin Blu-ray (Kino / Redemption)
Jesus Franco Blu-ray (Kino / Redemption)
It's been great to see the surge continue into 2013 from Kino and Redemption with the Jean Rollin and Jesus Franco titles on Blu-ray. Also props to Severin and Mondo Macabro for their strategic support under the Franco category as well! Here's hoping for even more in 2014!

    Day of the Animals (Scorpion)
Scorpion should be given props for saying, "No not again" to bad transfers and doing what Media Blaster never would: pay to re-do a scan if the results aren't satisfactory.

    Vincent Price Collection (Scream Factory)
The key here are the Vincent Price introductions which were very literally saved from the landfill to end up in this set.

    House of Wax 3D (Warner)
It's just so great that Warner ponied up to bring us House of Wax and Dial M for Murder in their original 3D.

    Mario Bava / AIP (Arrow)
Arrow went the extra mile over Kino and delivered the alternate cuts of the Mario Bava releases which have gone unreleased for many years since VHS. They also delivered superior transfers so we wouldn't have to weight the options of better transfers vs. having Karloff's original voice. Overall Arrow has become a much more rounded company delivering superior extras, packaging and now finally transfers.

    The Wicker Man (StudioCanal)
Another search of materials and this time they were able to find the director's preferred version. While there may still be some footage out there this is a great find and the extra effort put forth in the UK edition to include all three cuts is exactly what the fans would want.

    Demons / Demons 2 (Synapse)
    The Re-Animator (Capelight)

They were both excellent restorations when second rate transfers were available for them to ship out without any effort. Both were expensive limited editions that were dickish in their own way. However Re-Animator is simply the better film and was more of a must have because of that.

Honorable Mentions: 88 Film's Full Moon Releases.
None of these releases are especially earth shattering but 88 Films have proven they can release a better product than Full Moon themselves and they're doing it for all of our favorites.

So close yet so far away: Horror of Dracula (Blu-ray)
It's fantastic that most (but not all) of the cut footage was found in Japan, but unfortunately the transfer itself was overly tinted Blue. Hammer's "restorations" in general have been a mixed bag and while some were acceptable others were simply disasters. It's these disasters that lead me to believe even the acceptable transfers could probably have been done better with more knowledgeable people behind the wheel. For now I've held off on all of these releases hoping for a second chance, especially because Warner has yet to release theirs.

I didn't buy many more than ten 2013 releases. I could list 10, but after about five they'd make the list basically by default. I'll only submit the standouts.

    1. Red River (Wild Side Video)
    2. The Quiet Man (Olive)
    3. Runaway Train (Arrow)
    4. The Vincent Price Collection (Shout)
    5. Two-Lane Blacktop (Criterion)

Some of my highlights of the year for bith movie and transfer quality.
The Big Gundown(Grindhouse) what a wonderful package and a soundtrack CD.I would have liked a English dub with subs for the Italian scenes in the directors cut but that is the only gripe.
Corruption(Grindhouse). Been after this for ages and this BD didnt disappoint.
Dracula(Hammers 1958 version). Beautiful transfer, good extras and a fully uncut print.
The Car(Arrow). Another guilty pleasure of mine given the delux treatment.
Tales From The Crypt(Anolis media book Germany). A release that came from nowhere. Classic Amicus horror on a great BD with very cool packaging.
Tower Of Evil(Scorpion). Another movie where the upgrade from DVD to BD was most welcome.
Blood On Satans Claw(Odean). Another great Blu ray upgrade of a classic British horror movie.
Day Of The Animals(Scorpion). Great transfer and DTS HD MA sound mixes. Chuck out those old Shriek Show DVDs.
The Mummy(1959). Another well produced Hammer classic on BD with good extras and transfer.
House On Straw Hill(Severin). Not a great transfer by any stretch but good to see it finally uncut.
