I can't decided whether or not to keep or sell my The Pit / Hellgate DVD.

I have Arrow's Hellgate blu-ray, but it's region locked and only works on one of my players.

It's never a bad idea to hold onto the old release until reviews are out. You could always sell it later on. Just a thought.

Oops, I sold my German Solarbabies BD in anticipation of Kino's release. How could the Germans best a US release? Must be the first time in history lol.

Even the German Blu-ray of The Challenge beats the recent US Blu-ray of it... also released by Kino.

I have the Kino release of The Challenge and it looks pretty good. I think the German release uses the same transfer, correct? So, I'm assuming that the photo gallery and trailer are what trumps the Kino disc. Also the booklet, but that's in German, so it's not any good to me. One area the Kino disc definitely wins in is with it's cover. I much prefer the cool original poster art over Scott Glenn's head sticking out of the ground.

About the film itself; It was a lot of fun. I hadn't seen it in many years. The first time was on a channel like Showtime where I taped it on my VCR. I don't think I could even find a legitimate VHS release. I really enjoy Scott Glenn in this one. He's usually regulated to ensemble pieces, but he proved here that he could carry a picture too. Mifune is Mifune and alway fun to see. It's not Red Beard, but his presence is enough. I also like the asshole henchman that works for Mifune's brother.

Frankenheimer had fallen on hard times at this point, but he always gave it his best. He never lost his eye for composition. Take for example the scene in the bar with the henchman playing the arcade game and propositioning Glenn. I love that setup and how the whole scene plays out in one shot. Frankenheimer could always stage an action sequence and he has a few good ones here. Especially the fish market scene and the siege at the end. I love the sword fight and how brutal and quick it is. Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack is also excellent. I'm glad I picked this one up.

It uses the same transfer, even though Kino touted it in their press releases as a "new transfer" specifically for their release.

The Kino disc lacks the optional English subtitles for the film, which some people prefer especially for some of the Japanese accents. The German release also uses the same original poster art inside the outer slipcase. The booklet, while in German does have posters, photos, etc.. Plus, you do get the "open-matte" version of the film as a bonus which is nice to have.

Kino are the just the "bare bones" studio for titles like this and Solarbabies it seems.

I've never seen The Challenge before, but I added it to my wish list. It looks right up my alley. I'm a sucker for Scott Glen and ninjas.

Also Star Crystal (1986) will be released.

Look at Kino on a Sci-Fi roll.
