Someone made a post on AV Maniacs yesterday that said this: "It seems that Paramount is currently working on an HD master of this film..." I discounted this since it was April Fool's Day, but on the off chance it was true, I emailed the guy to ask him if he was being serious, or pulling a prank.

Here's what he told me: "No it isn't a joke, a FaceBook friend of mine who is working for dvd companies posted last week on his FB wall the news that Paramount has a new HD master for the film, so i guess that this year a dvd or Blu Ray will be released."

Next year is Paramount's 30th anniversary, my guess is it'll be hitting DVD in 2013.

My guess, it will show up on some random cable HD channel and nothing else.

The big studios are always remastering their catalogs as new technology becomes available and new distribution formats pop up. Most of them have such huge catalogs that by the time they've gotten around to remastering a lot of their lesser titles there's a new format or new telecine technology on the horizon, and so the process begins anew. I remember many, many years ago there was some excitement on the Mobius forum because a poster's friend worked at a telecine house and had reported to him that the elements for THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT had just been delivered from MGM, but the new transfer that they did simply ended up on cable and it wasn't until recently that it came out on disc as an MOD. So the simple act of remastering a given catalog title in no way guarantees that a release is on the horizon. Still though, it's always possible that an in-house disc is planned, or perhaps that Olive Films will end up licensing this one.

I hope it's the extended/directors cut version of the film they are working on as the original was cut to shit.

Love to see it turn up but past experience won't have me holding my breath waiting for it.

Paramount's 100 this year, The Keep turns 30 next year. I think somewhere along the lines you mixed the 2 anniversaries up.

I really dig The Keep. I could see what Michael Mann was trying to do with it before Paramount made him hack out half of the film. As usual, an awesome Tangerine Dream score to boot. Great cast too!

Via Vision have just released an official DVD in Australia:

    https://www.diabolikdvd.com/product/the-keep-dvd-ntsc-all-region/
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/keep-the-1983-dvd

It is NTSC (not PAL), 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and region-free according to its back cover. The trailer is included as the sole bonus feature.

I wouldn't be waiting on a Blu-ray to surface anytime soon, as no HD master of the film exists yet.

More info about the DVD release can be viewed here: https://stack.com.au/film-tv/rediscovering-the-keep/

Now the question. Is it worth the $20 (not including shipping) for a dvd.

I should know soon... I ordered it earlier with the Freakmaker Blu-ray at Diabolik. Looking at the specs in DVD Profiler, it's on a dual-layered DVD-9, so Via Vision apparently at least tried to present it as best as they possible could, given the SD limitations of the existing master from Paramount.

The old SD laserdisc rip I have could certainly look and sound better, that's for sure. And given the difficulties with bringing this title to a physical release, it wouldn't surprise me if a Blu-ray (and obviously a new HD scan) was far into the future.
