I don't see all the comparisons to Saw. Yeah it's from the same writers as IV-VII, there are traps and the basement scenes have that icky green tint to them but both films are very different from each other. The traps are completely different as well. The Collector is in his own badass league. Can't wait for the sequel.
I don't remember where I read this, or if there is even any validity to it, but I remember reading that this movie was originally intended as Saw IV. The script got leaked, so they wrote a new Saw IV and turned the original script into The Collector.
Actually the script was written before Saw and the producers were going to turn it into a Saw prequel. They quickly forgot about that idea and made it as is. But the script for The Collector is what got them hired for Saw IV.
I watched the Blu earlier and it looks tremendous. Not only a fine representation of how it looked theatrically, but also just a gorgeous HD transfer in general. It looks even better than I thought this film could. I'm glad Vivendi came through. Cool alternate ending, by the way.
My short review: Rented the BD blindly, will be buying very soon. Fucking dope movie, best new horror in a while. Great characters, great kills, great flow, just fucking great shit! First person to lump this into torture porn gets slapped!
Yeah, I bought the blu-ray yesterday. Great film indeed. Already watched it twice. This one is screaming for a sequel, wouldn't mind if they do.
Well Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton are writing the sequel as I type due to a request for another Collector from the producers. Can't wait.
I liked the movie, but I really gotta disagree with Cujo's assessment on the Blu-Ray. I found the transfer quite grainy (was this filmed on 16mm originally, by the way?). And I despised the sound mix. The left and right and surrounds were fine, but the center was practically non-existent. I could barely hear any dialogue. Luckily, the film is about 80% dialogue free, but it's the least-impressive Blu I've seen yet.
I really liked this movie. Sorta like a slasher with traps. I rented the Bluray and thought it looked excellent, but the scene with Arkin talking to the dad in the basement appeared to have a glitch. The blacks on the back of the chair that the dad was in looked all boxy. Did anyone else notice this or is it just a glitch with the one I rented? Movie looked great otherwise.
It was filmed in 16mm for the most part. I don't have the Blu-ray but I love the grainy look of the film. Reminds of the horror films of the '70's.
Yep, 16mm. The transfer is an excellent replication of how I recall the film looking in the theater. If anything, I'd say it may even be a bit clearer. The look is a large part of what drew me to the film in the first place back when the TV spots were airing.
I went into this expecting another one of those D.T.V. torture porn-SAW clones...boy was I pleasantly surprised!
LOVED it. One of the best of last year. Great pacing, wonderful photography, creepy villain. Definitely want to add it to my collection, and would love to see a sequel.
I watched this tonight and liked it a lot.I also thought it was going to be a SAW ripoff but was pleasantly surprised. Its the first movies in a long time, where I felt and rooted for the main character.I had a lot of fun with it also and the gore wasn't half bad and it looked to be latex based.I didn't like that they didn't show the killer.I guess he "collected" because of his profession.I need to check out the directors comm track. sean
This movie sucked. There was some potential, including some decent acting and an interesting back-story for the main protagonist that was never really exploited, but the script was so completely asinine that it was all for naught.
I think its coming into the cinemas here in the UK next Friday. I think it looks quite good but at the same time I think it could be just as typical as Saw with all the torture porn kills.
The filmmakers were recently on a podcast, where they revealed The Collected (the third movie) only filmed for eight days back in 2019 before getting shut down. The producers stopped returning their calls and e-mails, and there are no plans to resume filming.
