    Trailer:

Coming April 2020 from A24 (most likely limited theatrical, with VOD/streaming on this one).

There, but for the grace of God, goes Maud, a reclusive young nurse whose impressionable demeanor causes her to pursue a pious path of Christian devotion after an obscure trauma. Now charged with the hospice care of Amanda, a retired dancer ravaged by cancer, Maud's fervent faith quickly inspires an obsessive conviction that she must save her ward's soul from eternal damnation - whatever the cost. Making her feature film debut, writer-director Rose Glass cannily lures the audience into this disturbed psyche, steadily setting up her veritable diary of a country nurse for an unnerving and ultimately shocking trajectory. Morfydd Clark (The Personal History of David Copperfield) portrays the sanctimonious Maud with an intense stoicism that belies a disquieting vulnerability, as Maud desperately vies for absolution and solidarity from her embittered patient (Jennifer Ehle, Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies). [Director] Glass tenderly captures this relationship with an empathetic gaze that first assumes an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere - but it isn't long before Maud's dogmatic candor incites an irreconcilable friction that spirals her mind into a suffocating confluence of creeping doubt and paranoia. As Glass tightens the screws on her misguided martyr, well-placed nods are made to religious horror forerunners like William Friedkin's The Exorcist, further contributing to the film's increasingly dread-filled malaise. And when this insidious fever climatically breaks, the consequences are devastating and terrifying in equal measure.

The US date was changed to July 17th, but it doesn't look like that's happening. UK has it opening in October.

Wouldn't be surprised if A24 dumps it to VOD like they're doing with First Cow, which they had planned to give a theatrical release in the fall.

    This was... very A24.

It's effective and well-done, and at only 80 minutes it doesn't overstay its welcome. That said, you know exactly where it's going every step of the way, and you're basically just waiting for it to happen. To simplify that synopsis, it's basically a "fill-in-the-blank from hell" movie where this time we get the caregiver from hell, only her motivations are a bit more unique than we typically see in these movies (religious extremism). It's not as good as it thinks it is, nor is it the second coming of horror it was advertised to be, but it's fine. A24's First Reformed is much better.

"Fine" is a great word for it. It really does not bring anything new. I knew nothing about it going in and once I realized it was a religious story rather than a supernatural one I could see where it was going. I'm not sure that it's even a horror film!

I forgot to chime in, but like everyone else I thought it was fine. I'll give kudos to Ryan Hollinger for pointing out a number of religious motifs that went over my head, but I still can't get behind this film other than "Meh... it was ok."

I'm already doomed. Satan has The Dark Side of the Moon, Biohazard, and Revenge of the Boogeyman on the projector, just waiting for me to take my seat for the eternity marathon.

Joel Robinson and a certain cybernetic chicken never knew how easy they had it.

Even though youre not named Walter, I had to give you my favorite Maude catchphrase. Totally offtopic a sec, man did I think of you first when the sky went orange this summer out there. On topic, this dvd is gonna be a blind buy for me, especially if it gets a drive in run. Showing support for these studios taking theatrical run finance risks. I guess the devil has me in its clutches already after I binged on Small Wonder and Marcus Welby all weekend inbetween reading vintage Harlequins! Commence warping as Im averaging 3 dvds daily.
