I'm a huge fan of Stevan Mena's Malevolence. I'm slightly less enthusiastic about his follow-up Bereavement, although to be fair, I've only seen it once and it's due for a revisit. That said, this news really excites me! A couple years back, the Blumhouse website broke some tragic news. Malevolence 3 had started filming but was in limbo due to the suicide of one of the film's stars, Scott Decker, during production in 2015. The movie was 75% complete, and the low-budget movie did not have the resources to re-cast and re-film his scenes that were already completed. Because of that, we might never see the final chapter of the Malevolence trilogy. Now comes the exciting news: the movie is completed! Still early, and no news of a release just yet, but there is a Malevolence 3! Here's the site that broke the news: https://monsterzeronj.wordpress.com/2018/06/07/breaking-news-stevan-mena-finishes-malevolence-3/ From Stevan Mena himself:
Good News! I really liked the first one and the second one was fair, so I am happy to see the trilogy get finished!
Supposedly we'll be seeing this in October. Limited theatrical, VOD, and blu-ray/DVD. No specifics beyond that, but my guess would be Epic Pictures (Terrifier, To Hell & Back: The Kane Hodder Story).
Amazon preorders are already up, too: https://www.amazon.com/Malevolence-Blu-ray-Stevan-Mena/dp/B07GRJGYPD/?tag=horrdigi-20&linkCode=ur1 https://www.amazon.com/Malevolence-...a/dp/B07GRRH5LT/?tag=horrdigi-20&linkCode=ur1 https://www.amazon.com/Malevolence-...a/dp/B07GRLPQLZ/?tag=horrdigi-20&linkCode=ur1 Release Date: October 12, 2018
So does the original blu ray of Bereavement have the Director's Cut or is that cut only available on this new release?
Received 1 & 2 on Friday, 3 was a straggler and showed up today. Excited to dig into these! The first movie is a favorite of mine.
I'm sure I've seen one of these before but can't remember. I'll watch the full trilogy probably for next year.
I posted my thoughts in the October thread when I watched them. I adored revisiting the first movie, it's a terrific piece of regional horror film-making. An essential purchase! I enjoyed Bereavement much more this time around. Great atmosphere. However, this new blu-ray might be inferior to the Anchor Bay one! The new one was a major letdown. Very cheap, very digital, and worst of all the gorgeous slaughterhouse location is completely MIA. It reminded me of the movie Offerings, although I'm sure the goal was Halloween.
Interesting! I too really enjoyed the first one, and thought the second one was mediocre at best, but certainly worth a watch. I already have the Blu-ray from anchor Bay of part two and don’t plan on “upgrading” it. Maybe I will just get the new blu of one. I have the old DVD release still. What was the difference with the Directors cut of part two?
To be honest, I've only seen Bereavement twice, and I couldn't tell you the difference. The first time was the Anchor Bay release back when that was first released 7 years ago. I didn't like it at the time, found it a bit too mean-spirited. The second time was this new blu-ray last week, and it really won me over this time now that I knew what to expect. What I can tell you about the discs is that the Anchor Bay blu-ray is a BD-50 while this new blu-ray is a BD-25. So there's not as much room here for the movie. This new director's cut runs two minutes longer than the previous version (109 minutes vs 107 minutes). However, the original blu-ray included 11 minutes of deleted scenes, while this new version only includes 4 minutes worth. That's a 7 minute difference. I assume 2 of those minutes were put back into the film, but that still means this new disc is still missing 5 minutes of deleted scenes. Aside from a TV spot, the rest of the extras appear to be carried over though. If you already own the Anchor Bay blu-ray, I'd say don't bother. However, the spines of these three releases align to form a bull skull, so they might look a little weird on your shelf without it.
