This one has been gaining a lot of buzz on the film festival circuit over the last year now and it is easily one of my most anticipated horror films for 2016. Peep the synopsis and trailer below.

"Baskin" will be released VOD from IFC Midnight on March 25th

    Synopsis
A five-man unit of cops on night patrol get more than they bargain for when they arrive at a creepy backwater town in the middle of nowhere after a call comes over the radio for backup. Entering a derelict building, the seasoned tough guys and their rookie junior, who’s still haunted by a traumatic childhood dream, do the one thing you should never do in this kind of movie: they split up. They soon realize they’ve stumbled into a monstrous charnel house and descend into an ever-more nightmarish netherworld where grotesque, mind-wrenching horrors await them at every turn. This is one baskin (that’s “police raid” to you non-Turkish speakers) that isn’t going to end well. But wait! Things aren’t what they seem in this truly disturbing, outrageously gory, and increasingly surreal film whose unpredictable narrative slippages pull the carpet from under your feet and keep you guessing right up to the final moment. A wildly original whatsit that reconfirms Turkey as the breakout national cinema of the moment.

As much as I liked this one, I can't say I'm in love with it. The direction/cinematography is what really makes this stand out. The visual style gives this film a creepy, nightmare like quality to it, making you question what is real and what is a dream. The cast is very likable, even the douchey characters that populate the film, and the gore is pretty nasty and blood soaked. Be warned though, the first half of this film is a slow burn. So be prepared for a lot of character development for the first forty minutes or so. And here lies the biggest problem I have with this film. The first half of the film does a fantastic job building up tension and atmosphere, giving the viewer a sense of dread as they are eagerly anticipate the terrible shit that is waiting for our main characters. Then there is the second half of this film, which has all the violence and chaos, and where the film loses a lot of steam. Sure, a good chunk of the violence here is brutal and a bit disturbing in parts, and the lead villain is absolutely fantastic, but most, if not all, of the brooding tension that was built up in the first half is lost in the final half. My patience was really being tested as the finale came up and I felt underwhelmed when all was said and done because the story devolved into "A Serbian Film" light with all the torture porn-esque sequences. This really could have been a home run but it came up a bit short. I still recommend this because it is still original enough compared to a lot of other horror films being churned out, but don't go in expecting a high octane action-horror film as the trailer would lead you to believe.

English dubs tend to be on the bad to ridiculous range. I would much rather watch the original language with subtitles. While subtitles can be done very poorly you can still get the emotion from the original dialect.

So after watching this I just can't give it a good recommendation. Thankfully Netflix saved me buying the blu-ray. There are certainly some nice things in the film but overall it just didn't entertain me. Has anyone else watched this one yet?

I watched it some months ago and like you can't really give it a good recommendation, and will re-post my thoughts below that were originally posted in the Shout Factory thread when this was announced:
Caught a theatrical screening of Baskin last month. While the story is pretty weak and the ending a big let down/done to death, the visuals and the sequence in the derelict police station has some of the best "hellish" atmosphere since Hellraiser. I just wished it actually stayed and went in that direction instead of what it decided to do...

Despite the mixed thoughts on it I kind of want to see it.

To me it's worth watching any movie regardless of other opinions since you may find things you truly love about it. Especially if you have Netflix so it won't cost anything extra.

It seems like a lot of the IFC Midnight titles have worked their way over to Hulu. I had this in my NetFlix queue until it expired, and now it's over on Hulu so I finally watched it there.

I can't say I was huge fan, but I'm glad I saw it via streaming as opposed to a blind-buy. It was fine for a one-time watch I suppose. It's about as belated to the torture-porn / French extremism crazes as I am to watching the damn thing however many years later.

I guess there's some cool nasty imagery in the second half, but I hated all the lead characters. You spend half of the movie watching these guys be assholes, and then the other half watching them being tortured and killed. When it was over, it was like... so what? I would have preferred a cat-and-mouse style movie once they get to the police station in the vein of REC, because watching people chained up and being tortured just gets boring after a while. But hey, if you like that kind of thing, here you go...
