Just saw on Facebook that Arrow are currently working on a 4k restoration of The Thing. Colour me excited!

Well, to be more precise, Universal is doing a 4k restoration that Arrow will utilize.

I'm not even surprised it's so soon after the Scream release. I was genuinely surprised Scream wasn't using a 4k master. 4k has become so routine now it seemed so inevitable.

Which is feeding into my suspicion that the studio's dump of higher profile back catalog titles to third parties is an indication that these back catalog titles are coming to UHD sooner rather than later. Milking the 2k transfers for one final round to pay for the next 4k scan.

Ah ok, well I'm sure Arrow will do a great job with whatever alterations they have to make. I just assumed Scream's blu was 2k because a 4k print couldn't be made for whatever reason. It's a bit annoying that I bought that release after hearing this news but I can't complain if I'll be getting a nice new Arrow edition in 4k :D

2K and 4K (in reference to film restoration) are not prints or physical things, but scanning resolutions. The more you know!

Oh I know. I was trying to say I assumed it just couldn't be done with the materials they had for whatever reason.

When they release it on 4k uhd blu ray then I will become interested all these 4k scans downscaled to 1080p are pointless

The downscaled 4k scans still looks better than any previous releases 99% of the time. I'd prefer a 4k/Bluray release so I can have both but still think these new 4k masters are worth it in 1080p if you really love a film.

I assume Arrow only holds the rights outside of the USA? If so, then I'll import. I never bought the Shout Factory and I own the Universal blu. This would be a good upgrade.

The Thing is one of my favorite films. I already own it on blu-ray twice but immediately purchased the limited Arrow when it was announced. Zombie Dude is correct. If the film is eventually released in UHD I'll simply purchase that as well.

From owning the original non anamorphic Universal dvd to the Universal Blu Ray. Then last year i imported the Scream release and yesterday i got my hands on the new release from Arrow and as expected its the best of the best transferwise and the new 1hr 17min documentary is really good.

The Scream has probably the best extra's though in general the Stuart Coen commentary and all the new featurettes are all worth owning.

I'm only just catching up with this now and thought I'd order the special edition today since it's being released tomorrow, but of course it's sold out everywhere already on pre-orders. Had to buy one on ebay , from a guy who had pics of the 20 copies he'd pre-ordered to re-sell!

At least I found one before the prices went sky high, also looking for an Arrow special edition Deep Red but prices on those are a bit crazy.

Anymore if something appears limited and in demand I just get it for this exact reason. Even if I'm lukewarm on it.

I had the Steelbook on preorder until I saw they are releasing a standard version next month. It has all the same features too I believe. So I'm going to save myself a few bucks and just grab that one instead. I didn't care for all the extra swag in the LE to consider ordering that either.

I made the same mistake with the Arrow Deep Red SE. When I tried to buy it there weren't any regular priced copies left. It ended up costing me about $40.00 more than if I had pre-ordered it. Now like Angelman says if it's limited just order in advance.

if the LE of The Thing had included the soundtrack, i might have picked that, but now i'm quite pleased with the regular edition

Shout's The Thing Blu looks slightly better than Arrow's imho.

Based on the full-screen comparisons on caps-a-holic, I would say the same thing. I see a pretty big difference, myself. The details are a lot finer in Shout's version, to my eyes.
