That being said, I think it's equally likely that Universal puts out UHDs of Halloween II/III and The Thing this fall. I mean, they put out Waterworld for Christ's sake. Universal knows what's up when it comes to mastering their movies in 4K. Their releases are stunning.

Is there something wrong with StudioCanal or is it just that now there's going to be a US alternative? I have their release of Prince of Darkness and think it looks awesome.

US/Can alternative, yeah. They're both using the same encode this time around so there'll no difference between the transfers. However, StudioCanal does tend to have shoddy compression (there's parts of The Fog that look awful in HDR10 but look better in DolbyVision) even though yes, the 4K remasters blow the previous editions away. They're certainly not the best when it comes to encoding their discs - macroblocking, poorly rendered film grain - but the John Carpenter remasters for the most part look amazing. Huge huge upgrade over the blu-rays, especially They Live. The blu-ray looks like a DVD in comparison. Despite some of their flaws, I'm definitely glad I own them. And damn they're quite valuable already.

David Mackenzie (who encodes a lot of Arrow's stuff) is doing the encoding on Flash Gordon, so you don't have anything to worry about. Guy's a maestro. He's done some StudioCanal discs, like Don't Look Now, Angel Heart and The Elephant Man and those got rave reviews. I only have Don't Look Now out of those 3 and it's one of the best encoding jobs I've ever seen.

But yeah, when I said I'm glad I no longer have to import it I meant simply because I can now just get it in stores here (likely cheaper too) and don't have to worry about it getting ruined in the mail. I got lucky with those John Carpenter limited edition UHD sets and Don't Look Now but I saw some people's got absolutely destroyed.

Def watching flash Gordon with Ted and Ted 2 when it comes out. Lighthearted triple feature.

Hopefully ending the drama over whether it will or won't be re-released, Arrow has officially re-announced Django.

I'm really on the fence about Blood Tide - it doesn't look very thrilling, but I'm a total Martin Kove fan. He's got that very specific combination of hunk factor and smugness that makes it very difficult for me to decide whether I love or hate the characters he plays.

I'm on the fence about this one too. I didn't think I was interested initially but after watching the Arrow trailer for it I thought it looked more interesting. But then at the same time I feel those trailers can make the films look a lot better than they are. So not sure lol.

Blood Tide is the kind of release that I will use to fill up my cart when they do a sale : I kinda want to see it but it doesn't really interest me enough to fork out the full price.

Thank you - that's my position as well. I hesitated when it was at pre-order price, and I kind suspect I will not enjoy it quite enough at full price.

You don't want to see James Earl Jones punching a watermelon and quoting Shakespeare? :D

I've always really liked the movie, and the new transfer/restoration is absolutely pristine considering that it's only been available on home video format in blurry VHS-quality for decades now. But now the Mediterranean cinematography really shines through.

James Earl Jones is definitely another reason this title has me interested.

His character is quite bizarre in this one, that's for sure.

Apparently there is a US release of the Alejandro Jodorowsky box set coming, not directly by Arrow but through ABKCO.

Interesting. The only time that I’ve ever heard of Abcko is in reference to early Rolling Stones releases.

Yeah, I've only ever heard of them as a record label before now.

Apparently it will be almost a direct port of the Arrow release as far as the transfers/discs and box design go, etc..

Abkco's involvement in the early Jodorowsky films ties back to John Lennon and Allen Klein, label founder and then manager to The Rolling Stones and The Beatles / Apple Records. Lennon had seen El Topo during it's initial arthouse run in Manhattan, loved it, and persuaded Klein to buy the distribution rights to it. Klein also acquired Fando y Lis and then financed / co-financed The Holy Mountain.
